Growing up in the heart of Amarillo brought tough times and real experiences for Christian Luginger. He knew art moved him and felt a strong calling but wasn’t sure how he was artistically. After watching Dale Chihuly on PBS, it clicked and glass was his new love. He realized he needed to escape in order not to become a part of the large negative stastitics of life in the streets. In 1999, Christian journeyed from Amarillo, Texas to Boulder, Colorado in order to study offhand and lampworked glass as an apprentice and student in various studios. To mature as a glass artist, with a mission to bring the knowledge back to Amarillo, he began seeking prolific professional artists to hone his craft. He wanted to share and educate his friends and neighbors who might be in need of an expressive outlet.

Christian sees art as a healing mechanism and therapy. People can make connections on so many levels, and then relate, appreciate, and express themselves more effectively. Enjoyment of being outside in nature, glass, independent studies, and the daily motivation he receives from our great God helps him to remember that each of us has a bright light that needs to shine in some way or another and to discover it. We were all created from sand and breath, and we are all hollow vessels at times that are cracked and in need of healing and fire.

Every class experience through his travels has deeply and uniquely affected his life and the way he shares his work. He is no longer the student, but the teacher. Christian now develops his own teaching and mentoring abilities by holding private lessons in his studio. He receives feedback from students, so that he may understand how to better communicate his art to others.

Artist Statement

Glass brings balance for me and our world in many ways. It helps me align my mind, body, and spirit, and it interrelates art, history, mathematics, and science. The world we live in is a gateway from old to new, from renaissance to fiber optics and so on. Glass has been a positive influence on all the growth, change, and new technology we use every day. My work has transcended into an art of history, portraying how pieces developed 500 years ago can still be reproduced today while designing and expressing personal feelings. Through study of history, religion, and training in Aikido I developed a deep interest and respect for ancient and modern peoples lives and practices. Japanese, Celtic, Egyptian, and South American symbols along with Venetian, European renaissance styles and historical vessels have all heavily influenced my work and life. Dancing with this medium is challenging and relates to a living artform with motion, but glass art is also blood, sweat, and tears, with only one shot at perfection. You may work most of the day, but it only takes one wrong move to lose it all. You cannot just erase or paint over it. You have one shot… I primarily use borosilicate, colored tubes, rods, and dichroic. I work with traditional hand tools, and use an oxygen propane mixed torch for achieving blown and sculptural work with the glass itself. I also practice cold-working techniques for producing my jewelry and other pieces. I am member of the Glass Art Society, which is an organization devoted to exposing others to the wonders of glass. It is a powerful tool and resource. In this ever-growing industry, as I must always remain up-to-date about products, trends, and business development. I juggle the rising costs of materials and energy, maintaining positive creativity, staying organized and keeping my team flowing. The people I have met in the glass world have been great and talented individuals, which I feel blessed to know. Dreams and careers such as mine can come true. It's an opportunity daily working with the glass, friends, family, and the circle of artists who give their lives to it. Glass has changed my life for the better, and allowed me to lead others in a positive direction. My involvement with local charities and international donations allows me to give back and ensure future generations the chance to express themselves constructively and continue the art of glass.

THE ART GLASS ASSOCIATION PRESENTS
ART GLASS IN ART GLASS

My name is Mark Veit with AAE Glass and we had the honor and the pleasure of being a sponsor for the first time to the Art Glass Association and their initiative know as “Art Glass in Art Class.” This program took the association to 4 different locations across the country (Kentucky, Wisconsin, Florida and Michigan) and exposed several local teachers and schools to the world of glass art. In doing so, they were able to communicate how easy and cost effective it is to offer glass art classes to students of all ages. I took a trip up the west coast of Florida to St. Petersburg in order to see the association in action.

What I saw was amazing! Of the 30 or so booths at the convention, the Art Glass Association was 3 deep with people wanting to make a glass pendant on site. With the help of several volunteers in the glass world, they were able to present glass art in an extremely positive way. As I stood watching the faces of teachers coming back to pick up their pieces after they were fired, I was impressed that every single person had an enormous smile and they all wore it out of the convention. Honestly, 90% of the people at this convention were wearing glass pieces and to top that, they were stopping each other and asking questions about how they got the effect they did on their piece. The awareness that the Art Glass Association brought to thousands of teachers was more than impressive.

AAE Glass shares many of the same beliefs as the Art Glass Association. We believe in getting glass art of any kind in front of as many young people as possible. It is a way to strengthen the industry as a whole. If we can get glass art in schools and have children learn at a young age, we are cultivating future glass artists. Those of us in the business know the joys of glass art because we have been around it for so long, lets share that same passion with as many people as possible. You never know when the next world renowned glass artist, who is currently in 7^th grade, will come about. They need to be exposed to glass art sometime...Why not now!

Steve Shupper made me aware of the AGA during a convention in Omaha, Nebraska earlier this year and I am glad he did. AAEGlass will be a supporter of theirs from here on out. The AGA is the largest association in the world dedicated to the business of art glass. It was founded in 1986 and is an international non-profit organization. To learn more about the ArtGlassAssociation, please visit their website HERE. I encourage everyone to learn about this great organization and support them any way you can. Even if it is just spreading the word, any help is appreciated.

I want to recognize the volunteers I met in St. Petersburg and their shops. They worked very hard to make sure everyone knew what they were doing as well as answering numerous questions. These people are all willing to help spread the word of glass art and are willing to share their studios with anyone who wants to learn.

AAE Glass Features Glass Artist Jerry Keller

AAE Glass is proud to present Glass Artist, Jerry Keller of KellerGlass Art. I have recently had the pleasure to view Jerry's glass work and converse with him via email and I have to say, it some of the best I have ever seen. He combines music, fun and glass to create some very unique glass art. The list of people who own a Jerry Keller glass piece is very impressive. Paul McCartney and Michael Jordan are just the beginning. Living in Cleveland, Ohio and near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Jerry's work fits right in. Music has always helped create my dance with art.  From saxophone, to guitar, percussion, to singing, the essence of sound has helped inspire my designs. So one logical sequence in my visual thread, was to pay homage to the form of the instrument itself.   Being in Cleveland, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, helped to nurture the series - theglass guitar.  

Since around 1996, when I created four painted wood guitars for my son to rollerblade with in our Art Museum parade, the form of the guitar has seemed to blossom in many incarnations.
From paintings to hand-painted guitars, computer graphic renderings, to guitars made solely from glass, this instrument has challenged and focused my attention.  All this, while being a life-long saxophone player!  Ah, the dichotomies of life...(but yes, saxophones do surface in the glass series, also...)


After years of exploring this loaded form, and 38 years in the glass field, I find new inspirations almost daily with which to create these visual inspirations.


The guitars are a fun diversion from my usual fare of stained, etched, and cast glass windows, doors, and tables.   I also create glass and metal sculpture, and work on several high end Corporate Awards that include both casting, etching, and metal materials.   Feel free to check out my website - www.kellerartglass.com, for more guitars, both mini and full sized, and other renderings of glass creations through the years.
